Harnessing the power of healthy daily routines

‘You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.’

John C. Maxwell

Both successful people and unsuccessful people have the same goals. Besides favours from Lady Luck and hard work, what makes successful people stand apart is the fact that they have healthy daily routines. Unfortunately there are some negative connotations to the word ‘routine’ as it gives one the feeling of ‘ordinary’ or ‘boring’ or ‘the regular’ or ‘drudgery’. Most of us believe variety is the spice of life even though very few of us understand that it is not really sustainable, healthy or affordable to live each day very differently.

Healthy routines are great not just for parents and children but for everyone who wears multiple hats and shoulders multiple responsibilities each day. Every person wants to be successful in life. I believe that if we put some good thought behind building our routine and be open to improve it with experimentation , it can not just boost our productivity and efficiency but also make us feel more energised, healthy and happier.

When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don’t have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy. You can be satisfied anytime your system is running.

American leadership coach, John C. Maxwell said, ‘If I could come to your house and spend just one day with you, I would be able to tell whether or not you will be successful. You could pick the day.’.

Success in any field cannot be an overnight achievement and it takes a lot of preparation, focus and persistence. He continues, ‘You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.’ Unless we have goals and we orient our daily lives in such a way that we always try to inch closer to our goals even if very slowly, we can never be sure of reaching success. Be it fitness goals, career goal, relationship goals or financial goals, they have to be made part of a single daily routine. Else we leave a lot to chance.

We need a daily routine to nourish all four areas of life viz. love, work, play and health. This means we include some quality time with our loved ones, some sport or games with friends, working on priorities at workplace, something to nourish your spiritual side and healthy eating and physical activity. Only then is it sustainable, complete and healthy. If parenting is one of the most important things we do daily, then it should be integrated as well into our daily routine.

You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

Goals are good only to give us a direction, but the progress we make really depends on the routines or systems that we fall back on. So, whatever be the goal, think of what you can do today to get there (routine) and how you can do things everyday (habit) to finally get there building healthy daily routines.
